Preservation of historic monuments — collectively working in the here and now.

Restoration, preservation and conservation of structures and works of art require expert knowledge, skilled hands and lots of love. Because, in order to extend the lifespan of a given object and preserve it in all its glory for coming generations, it is not enough to merely see their present state.

One needs to find their essence, understand what they once were and how they came into being. The surest way of achieving this is to work as a team - because many eyes (and hearts) see many more things. And that is precisely how we do it at Buch & Schudrowitz.

Restoration of original exterior coatings/ finishes, wall paintings and stone.

We restore exterior coatings according to the historic original. However, we are concerned with the full range of exterior and interior elements. This includes walls, ceilings, molding, windows, doors, floors, technical details, and the like. Because of this range of tasks, we are on familiar terms with any kind of surface, subsurface and carriers. Our portfolio covers every type of structure from gazebo to palace.

Consequently, we offer a wide range of services, ranging from simple design and re-design of interior and facades to restoring intricate and opulent wall and ceiling paintings and decorations. In addition to restoration work we offer professional conservation and re-construction of architectural surfaces.

Restoration exploratory analysis

An exploratory analysis is a crucial element for the development of a restoration and/ or conservation plan. Authorities charged with the protection and preservation of monuments often require such preliminary reports.

The procedures for explorations of this kind are subject to stringent regulation, with technical aspects closely overseen by state authorities. We offer comprehensive consulting services to guide you through the preliminary stages and, of course, gladly take on the actual exploration itself.

Should you require more detailed information, you’ll find it in the Leitfaden zur Erstellung von restauratorischen Dokumentationen in der Baudenkmalpflege (PDF) which is an official guide to the proper documentation of building restoration. (Unfortunately, this official document is available in German language only. However, we would help in obtaining translations.)

Own products

Thanks to decades of hands-on experience and far-reaching expertise we have the ability to manufacture, customize and refine several products and materials ourselves. Paints, colors, auxiliary substances (e.g. paint stripper) as well as mortars and felts are among the materials we have developed.

For example, in order to revive ancient but proven formulas and recipes we delve deeply into all available information on the subject, precisely determining the chemical and physical properties and reactions of a given material. The resulting manufacturing process foregoes >if at all possible< the use of any industrial products.

If necessary, we omit the use of certain materials components, substitute no longer allowed or no longer available ingredients, using new ones in their stead. In fact, sometimes we even invent entirely novel products that we then fuse with the historical materials in order to attain optimum results.

Construction site tours for non-professionals

We gladly satisfy the curiosity of the public about our restoration and conservation projects. We do this by offering guided tours to our sites. We also aim to foster interest in our fascinating field in general, by offering guided tours as part of official events such as the “Monuments Open House Day”. It is our aim to make people understand our love and respect for the treasures of times gone by.

Our guided tours are never just concerned with outside aspects of a given object but endeavor to provide insights into the underlying conservation concepts and measures. We aim at sharing with the public the wide and various applications of conservation work. This way, visitors may attain an understanding of the possibilities and various strategies of dealing with ancient materials, substances and structures.
